Chapter Fourteen
âRileyâs here, just as I suspected. Noah dropped her at the Croft Estate before heading back to Boston.â Charles stood on the wooded side of the creek, staring up at the second-floor window where a shadow moved every now and then. He clutched the phone a little tighter in his gloved hand. âI got a good look at her when she let the dogs out into the yard earlier this evening. Then one of them started barking, so I ducked back into the trees.â
âAny chance you can grab her?â
âShe hasnât left the estate since I got here, and Iâm pretty sure she isnât going anywhere tonight.â He shifted and stomped his feet, to keep the blood circulating. âIâm freezing my ass off. Iâll find a motel room somewhere nearby and come back in the morning.â
âPay in cash.â
âIâm not stupid.â
âNo, youâre not. Figuring out which member of Counterstrike left Boston alone, then tracking her to New Hampshire was pretty damn brilliant.â His benefactor let out a harsh breath. âI almost had her in Maine, but almost isnât good enough, and I couldnât risk sticking around with police canvasing the neighborhood. Once Dr. Kimball returns from wherever their team went, heâll be all over Riley again. Nowâs the time to make a move.â
âExcept the estate has fairly extensive security, and Riley isnât alone. Both Scarlet and Eli Croft are with her. I have a feeling Iâm no match for that woman. Unless Riley goes off on her own . . .â
âFor Christâs sake, figure something out.â
Charles rolled his eyes. âMaybe you should have hired a professional who knows what the hell heâs doing. That certainly isnât me.â
âBut I can trust you to keep your mouth shut.â His hard tone held nothing but confidence. âHired muscle might try to blackmail me down the road. Since I donât need any more complications, maybe try the direct approach.â
âWhatâre you talking about?â
âCall her and tell her you need to see her immediately. Make up something. I donât care what. Draw her out.â
âThen sheâll know Iâm involved. I was planning toââ
âDonât be naïve. Staying anonymous is no longer an option. Once we get the final adjustments she made to the formula, Iâll deal with her. Permanently. That idiot Murdock is making noise about another attempt on Riley, despite the scrutiny on him. If he does something stupid, I swear to God itâll be the last dumb-ass move he makes.â
Charles didnât want to think about another complication . . . or Rileyâs ultimate fate. He clamped his teeth together to choke back a protest. âMaybe if I bring her back to the lab, something there will jog her memory. She did sound pretty confident it was only a matter of time. Finesse may work better than force with her. Walking away from this with the treatment you need and no one the wiser was always our primary goal. Too bad if Vortex canât patent the process before she goes public with it.â
âI donât care what the hell you do as long as I get that data.
